Arnold Taylor
Arnold Taylor, CBE, FBA, Chief Inspector of Ancient Monuments in England, Scotland and Wales, 1961-72, was born on July 24, 1911. He died on October 24, 2002, aged 91. Taylor’s studies of the great castles of Edward I in North Wales unquestionably paved the way for their designation as World Heritage Sites. His brilliant research in the Public Record Office and the archives in Savoy led to the discovery that Caernarfon and Conwy, with their town walls, and other castles were the work of one of the great medieval mason-architects, Master James of St George.
