Location: Dumfries & Galloway(NY 026656) Type: enclosure Date: 1280
Built by the Maxwells. An unusual triangle shape castle having a long history. Surrounded by a moat with the gatehouse in one corner. Murdoch, Duke of Albany, was imprisoned here before execution in 1425. Captured by the English in 1300. Captured in 1357 by Roger Kirkpatrick. Rebuilt by Robert, 2nd Lord Maxwell in 1452. Surrendered to the English in 1545. Recaptured by the Scots. Taken by the English in 1570. Rebuilt in 1634. Taken and slighted in 1640.
