Castle Outreach:
Narberth Castle

The History
Narberth Castle Narberth Castle is a fine ruin. A stone enclosure on a ridge at the south end of town, it contains a cylindrical great tower. The ruins of four out of five original round flanking towers can also be seen.

It was built in the 13th century, near the site of a Norman motte castle of c. 1100, which had been destroyed by the Welsh in 1116.

What is needed
Narberth Castle rests on private land, and is being neglected. We visited this site in October of 1998. Weeds have over-grown the site, and it is posted as "No Trespassing, unsafe structure". It is not in the hands of any preservation organization nor care takers. What is needed are suggestions and donations to organizations to get this wonderful castle preserved for future generations.
Update: December 2, 2000
A Heritage Lottery Grant of £209,000 has been awarded to SPARC Ltd. for the consolidation of the remaining structures of Narberth Castle in Pembrokeshire. Narberth Castle has been the object of much campaigning to save it from further deterioration by various preservation organizations. The grant was initially approved in June 2000.
