Castle Outreach:
Ardrossan Castle

The History
ardrossan Castle Ardrossan Castle is a 12th century castle slighted by Oliver Cromwell. An angle of the North tower remains. Part of the curtain wall can be seen and traces of later buildings remain. Filling much of the North side is what remains of the gatehouse. Little remains of the upper rooms, except one jamb of a fine fireplace. There is evidence of 16th century alterations, due to the fact there is a double splayed gunport in the ruins. A lot of the stone was removed to build a citadel at Ayr.

What is needed
When the castle was visited recently, it was found overgrown, and in poor condition. There were a few grave stones nearby, but there is no indication of what the graves contained, or if they had been moved. Machinery used for cutting the grass seemed to have run over everything. The entire site looked as though no one cared. It is not in the hands of any preservation organization, nor care takers. What is needed are donations to organizations to get this wonderful castle preserved for future generations. Please send comments and donations to:
