Loch Doon Castle
The History
This remotely sited ruin stood on an island in Loch Doon until the 1880s when it was rebuilt on the shore above a planned rise in the water level to help supply the town of Ayr. It was built by Robert, Earl of Carrick. The castle was gutted by fire in 1530, but was restored and occupied until the 17th century.
