Castle Outreach:
Whittington Castle

The History
whittington castle Today the principal structure is the remains of the twin-cylindrical towered gatehouse. The stonework was begun in the 1220s, for a license to build upon the site of an earlier motte castle was granted by Henry lll in 1220. William Peverel built the Norman Motte and Bailey castle. The motte received a stone tower, and only the foundation remains. A stone curtain, with towers, enclosed the castle. Three towers remain.

What is needed
The Whittington Castle Preservation Trust was established in December 1998 in response to concerns for the long term future of the site, its deteriorating structure and setting. The Castle site is presently underused and the potential benefits to both the community and visitors are not exploited (It is beyond the scope of this web page to include all the information regarding The Trust and castle).

Membership of the "Friends of Whittington Castle" is open to everyone. It is an easy and inexpensive way for you to support the work of the Friends and of the Whittington Castle Preservation Trust in the massive task of acquiring, repairing, conserving, interpreting and maintaining the Castle buildings and environs.

£21,000 is needed to complete the feasibility study which will underpin the bids for funding of £95,000 needed to purchase a 99 year lease on the site. Added to these costs are the work of major structural repairs, day to day maintenance and the ongoing development of visitor facilities including displays and interpretations of the castle ruins.

By becoming a member, you can play your part in protecting this part of our national heritage for future generations.

The annual subscription is £5 per person. For this you will receive a quarterly newsletter to keep you up to date with progress of the project - but most importantly receive the satisfaction of helping to conserve our heritage.
